Transport between Lisbon, Portugal and Lagos, Algarve, Portugal

There are three main modes of travel between Lisbon, the capital of Portugal and Lagos, the historic picturesque city located in the south-west Algarve region of Southern Portugal.

These are:

Road:

By Toll motorway, Lagos is 300km from Praça Marques de Pombal, in the centre of Lisbon.

The route via either the Ponte 25 de Abril or Vasco de Gama Bridge runs via the A2 and the A22 Via de Infante Algarve Backbone Motorway.

Lisbon - Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge

Transit time with stops is about 3hrs15mins. At the time of writing (September 2016), the estimated toll & fuel costs for a small compact car from Lisbon to Lagos are:

Total: 44.93 €  (source: viamichelin.pt )

Tolls 20.45 €,
Fuel 24.48 €.

There are alternatives non-toll coastal routes along the Alentejo coast.

Rail:

Alfa-Pendular at Tunes Junction
National Portuguese operator cp.pt operates 2 Alfa-Pendular Hi-speed express trains per day between Lisbon Gare Oriente, Lisbon Entrecampos atations and Tunes Junction where there are connecting local trains along the Algarve Line (linha de Algarve) to Lagos. Transit times are approximately 3 hrs.

cp.pt also operates 3 Intecidade Trains between Lisbon Sete Rios, Lisbon Gare Oriente, Lisbon Entrecampos stations and Tunes Junction where there are connecting local trains along the Algarve Line (linha de Algarve) to Lagos. Transit times are approximately 3hrs45mins to 4 hrs.

Changing trains at Tunes Junction usually occurs on on Platform 2/3.It is better to stay on this platform unless otherwise advised.

Prices at the time of  writing in September 2016 are:

Single 2nd Class - Alfa Pendular - Lisboa Entrecampos to Lagos - (One way) 22,70€
Single 2nd Class - Intercidade - Lisboa Entrecampos to Lagos - (One way)  21,70€

Latest timetables in pdf format can usually be downloaded here:

http://www.cp.pt/StaticFiles/Passageiros/horarios/horarios/PDF/ap_ic/porto_lisboa_faro_lagos.pdf

Ticket can be booked online at cp.pt

Bus/Long distance Coach

There are two bus/long distance coach services between Lisbon and Lagos

a) rede-expressos.pt & eva-bus.com

These services depart from Lisbon Sete Rios Rodovíario (Bus Station) next to Sete Rios railway station and Metro Jardim Zoologíco (linha azul/blue line)

Eva Bus at Lisbon Setet Rios
The EVA bus departures are usually faster, taking +-3hrs45mins BUT there is no stop between Lisbon and Lagoa in the Algarve.

The Rede-Expressos buses take longer but there are usually stops en route.

There are upwards 12 daily services between the two locations. Additional Services operate at peak periods and high-season.

Timetables & online booking for both services can be found here:

http://www.rede-expressos.pt/

Ticket prices vary dependent upon the service used but at the time of writing begin at €20.00 single one way.

b) renex.pt

RENEX.pt also operate bus services from Lisbon Gare Oriente Bus Station (Metro Gare Oriente - Linha vermelho - two stops from the airport) to Lagos. In Lagos, the buses leave from and arrive at the Renex office by the Repsol Service Station on the Avenida by the Muncipal Market.
Renex Bus at Lisbon Gare Oriente

However, these services take longer. Transit times are between 03hrs 45mins and 04hrs30mins. Buses stop once en route for refreshments. It may be necessary to change buses at the Renex Vale Paraiso bus station near Albufeira.

There are 7 daily services. Timetables can be downloaded here:

http://renex.pt/Files/Horarios_SUL.pdf

Unfortunately, it is not possible to to book this service online. Tickets can be purchased at the Renex Booking Offices in Lagos and at Gare Oriente.

Ticket prices vary dependent upon the service used but at the time of writing begin at €19.50 single one way.

In the writer's opinion, with over 19 buse services daily between Lisbon & Lagos, bus offers the best option for return day trips between the two centres.

If arriving at Lisbon Airport and travelling to Lagos for for a stay, the train or bus from Gare Oriente to/from Lagos is the most convenient as there Metro runs directly between the two. (Three stops)

It should also be born in mind that, often, there are no taxis at either Lagos Station or Lagos Bus Station. There are usually taxis available near by the stop for Renex.pt buses in Lagos.

Granada to Sagres, Cabo St. Vincente

If you really mean that you wish to get to the Lighthouse at Cabo St. Vicente, you should be aware that in winter there is only one bus a day on week days that serves this location. As there is no accommodation, if taking the bus it means that you would have to walk the 5 to 6 kms back to Sagres the nearest town. You may be able to rent a bicycle in Sagres and visit Cabo St. Vicente that way.

This bus is as follows:

Lagos Cabo S.Vicente 10:30 11:25 Mondays to Fridays only.

On this basis, if you are intended making a return trip from Granada, and Cabo St. Vicente is your final destination, a rental car would probably be a good option.

According to Google Maps, the distance is 562 km and will take about about 6 hours each way. I have driven all this route myself and it is motorway all the way to Lagos 40 kms from Cabo St. Vicente - there is a good road from Lagos to Sagres and Cabo St. Vicente. The only potential problem can be bottlemecks on the ring road around Seville.

See this link for a map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Granada,+Spain&daddr=Cape+St+Vincent+-+SW+Portugal&hl=en&geocode=%3BCbs3T9TiCub8FUPaNAIdBLd2_yFjIe6EuYKFRQ&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=34.452218,5.493164&sspn=16.814361,37.749023&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=7

If you intend using public transport, the only feasible means is by bus.

This will involve three buses:

Granada - Seville

You would need to get a bus from Granada to Seville Plaza das Armas Bus Station.

www.alsa.es operate from Granada to Seville Est. Prado but then you would need to get a local bus from there to Seville Plaza das Armas.

Buses from Seville to Lagos.

Seville Plaza das Armas - Lagos (Algarve)

Dept: Seville 07:30 Arr Lagos 12:00 Daily
Dept: Seville 16:15 Arr Lagos 20:45 Daily

With the second service you would have to spend the night in Lagos and then continue to Sagres/Cabo St. Vicente the next day. Similiarly, neither of the two buses connects with the only service to Cabo S.Vicente as indicated above. You would need to spend the night in Lagos or Sagres.

Lagos - Sagres - Cabo St. Vicente.

The first bus would connect with the following and later buses to Sagres.

Lagos Sagres 12:40 13:35 Daily
Lagos Sagres 13:35 14:40 Weekdays/Saturdays.

There are about 11 buses per day from Lagos to Sagres. Less at weekends.

A final thought. You might want to stay in Lagos and rent a scooter for the day and ride out to Cabo S.Vicente.

You could try:

Luis of Sidecar 32 in Torraltinha,Lagos is one.
He can be contacted via the following address.
Side Car 32 - Motociclos de Aluguer, Lda.
R. St Casa Misericórdia
8600-621 LAGOS

He can deliver a bike to you in town at the Luzcar Office behind the Repsol Garage on the main Avenida.

Lagos, Algarve - Midnight bar curfew from February?

Regrettably, this has been in the air for years.
Despite the economic crisis and the travails it has brought, Lagos Council seems hell bent on continuing to destroy what little remains of its night-life attraction. While I can sympathise with the issue of noise in the old town, it is a regrettable side effect of about the only economic raison d'etre for the town, at present.
Fishing is practically dead, the cost of parking is chasing people away from down-town shops, and this latest move will contribute to the slow death for the solo traveler business.
Lagos, for many years, has been on the European backpacker route for US and Antipodean travelers. One of the attractions has been the late night activity. This has generate substantial income for Lagos in terms of backpacker hostels, etc. It has also spread the word about the desirability of Lagos as a holiday destination.
Lagos is already suffering from a number of almost terminal hits.
I have never seen Lagos so quiet as over the past few days. Even the Vila Galé Hotel only had 20 to 30 cars in the car park over Christmas.
Meia Praia is empty. Usually there is the usual small crowd of folk from LisbonSeville etc. This year none!!!!
Lagos in the Algarve is dying. The local youth are moving away and it is not just because of the economic crisis.
I suspect, that in the absence of having money to spend, and to try to distract the populace from the fact that vast amounts of money do not appear to have been spent wisely in Lagos in recent years, the Council, with elections coming up in late 2013, are trying to push through a measure that will be popular with residents of the old town, irrespective of the economic consequences.
Given the increased cost and difficulty of getting to Lagos, what with ongoing train strikes, motorway tolls, reduce frequencies of flights to Faro, the prognosis for this town is not good.
I have always made an effort to promote and encourage folk to visit Lagos, but these latest measures are making me actively desist from promoting it.
I no longer can recommend Lagos as an ideal cost-effective destination for holidays.
I now prefer to encourage travelers to visit Lisbon, where there is still a night life, a greater range of things to do and tourist offers, and some great beaches at Oeiras, Carcavelos and Estoril. From there, it is also much easier to visit other parts of Portugal, than it is from Lagos.
In the Algarve, albeit the eastern end, it appears that Olhão and Monte Gordo are making a real effort to promote themselves as "visitor friendly destinations"!!

Lagos, Algarve, Portugal - Travelling to/from Lisbon & Seville by Public transport

Visiting Lagos in the Western Algarve region of Southern Portugal.

Here's some tips on how to get to Lagos by public transport from both Lisbon, Portugal and Seville, Spain.

Travel to/from Lisbon, Portugal

There are both long distance buses and trains connecting Lisbon to Lagos.

Depending on time of year, there are approximately 18 services a day.

Train :

One takes either a cp.pt Alfa-Pendular or Intercidades train with destination Faro, from one of two Lisbon main stations, Gare Oriente or Entrecampos. One changes at Tunes, a village in the interior of the Algarve countryside to a local train to Lagos. This takes about an hour.

Alfa-Pendular at Estação do Tunes, Algarve

The current timetable in pdf format can be found here:

http://www.cp.pt/StaticFiles/Passageiros/horarios/horarios/PDF/ap_ic/porto_lisboa_faro_lagos.pdf

Bus/Long Distance Coach::

There are three operators:

- EVA-Transport Mundial / Rede-Expressos who operate a combined direct(with stops) long-distance coach service from Lisbon Sete Rios Bus Station to Lagos and v.v.

Lisbon/Lisboa Sete Rios Bus/Coach Station - 2015

- Renex.pt which operates a long-distance coach service(with stops) from Lisbon Gare Oriente Bus Station to Lagos.

Transit times are between 03hrs 45mins and 04hrs30mins

Travel to/from Seville, Andalucia, Spain

There are three operators.

EVA-Transport Mundial Dama-sa.es who operate a combined direct(with stops) long-distance coach service to/from Sevilla Plaza das Armas Bus Station to Lagos and v.v.
- Alsa.es also operates as service to/from  Sevilla Plaza das Armas Bus Station to Lagos and v.v.

The best presentation on these services can be found on Cubsur's excellent site here:

Train from Lisbon to Lagos, Algarve, Portugal

The two daily Alfa-Pendular and three Intercidades trains leaving from Lisboa Entrecampos for the Algarve have Faro as their terminus.
To travel to Lagos by Train, one must descend at Tunes Junction and connect to a local train to Lagos.
If one searches the www.cp.pt in the panel on the top right hand of the first page for trains from Lisboa Entrecampos to Lagos and then click on the "details" link next to each result on the following page, it shows Tunes these details.
There are NO direct trains from Lisboa to Lagos.
However, we use the train regularly to get up and down from Lagos to Lisboa and the change at Tunes usually works like clockwork as one has +- 10 to 20 minutes to wait after the Lisbon train arrives before the Lagos one comes in and wanders of down to Lagos.
By public transport the only way to get from Lisboa to Lagos directly is by long-distance coach.
However, this takes a minimum of 3hrs:45mins with no stops! (On board toilet!) Not recommended for kids, especially in summer. (See: http://www.eva-bus.com/novo/)
There are slower buses www.renex.pt or www.rede-expessos.pt which do stop en-route for 15-20 minutes but these take up to 4hrs:30mins to do the trip.
Take it from an old hand....Take the train!

Lagos, Algarve, Portugal - New Car Parks to finally open - 1st July 2010

I have just received a twitter from Journal Barlavento reporting that the two new parking garages being built in Lagos, Algarve, Portugal will, at last, open to the public on 1st July 2010.

The article in Portuguese can be seen here: http://bit.ly/9nSLi3

A copy of the Council regulations with tariffs (in Portuguese) can be seen here: http://scr.bi/avkKob

It appears that the tariffs for the two new Parking Garages in high season will range from € 1.00 to € 1.25 for the first year.

It is also reported that parking along the Avenida will be subject to 3 hour limits and cost up to € 2.05 for three hours.

The Camâra Municipal de Lagos page with more info can, at present, be found here: www.cm-lagos.com

Despite the economic crisis, lets hope that this will finally allow downtown Lagos to get back on its feet and have a much better summer 2010 than the past two years!!!!!!!!!

*********************************************************

Lagos or Vilamoura?

Vila Gale is just round the corner from us. Will post a report shortly.

To be honest with the roads dug up both in the town of Lagos and now the main Meia Praia road, (just in front of the Vila Gale) (500m dirt diversion), I really have to say to people to give Lagos centre and Meia Praia a miss this summer. It is likely that the folks using the new pool at the Vila Gale will have to put up with sand and dirt being blown over from the ongoing road works outside.

The Camara (local council) have made a complete dog's breakfast of the planning and time scheduling of major local works, including the redevelopment of the riverfront and Meia Praia Rd. The Mayor's quoted response to local business during a recent meeting was that .."these works are in the public interest"....

If you heading for Torraltinha and the Porto de Mos area of Lagos there should be no problem.

However, the riverfront development and the redevelopment of the old dirt car-park together with a rampant ongoing blocking of parking spaces, means that I really have to suggest that trying to take a car into Lagos centre, even at night, this year is a no-no.

The projects in Lagos are due for completion by year-end.

However, based on my limited knowledge of engineering projects, I would suggest that we will be lucky if the town is approaching normal by this time next year.

If you are visiting Lagos by public transport it will be OK, with the exception of the eyesore of the works along the river front.

I love Lagos and would normally recommend it anytime over Vilamoura. However, in all honestly, we are in for a right rum summer season her in Lagos.

Can I suggest you also have a look at the options of Tavira, Monte Gordo and the Eastern Algarve.

Algarve - Lagos

If you are planning to travel by Public Transport, strongly recommend you consider Lagos.

Faro has some historic sights but it is not by the Sea. It is inland on a lagoon. It can be visited in a day by train or bus from Lagos.

Albufeira, has good bus services but the train station is 6 km from town. It is also tourist heaven.

In Lagos, we have great beaches including the 5km long Meia Praia Beach, some wonderful views and the town itself retains a strong Portuguese flavour. However, our town council has taken upon itself to dig up part of our main avenida in at present as part of a town modernisation project. Nonetheless, I think it would be a great place to stay.

Have a look at these items on my blog:

http://barlaventostravelblog.blogspot.com/search?q=lisbon+lagos

As regards hotels in Lagos, have a look at the Albergaria Marina Rio or the Marina Club. You can find their details on this page or a Lagos-based event I am helping organise:

www.dancaiberica.org/index.php

Note that the Romatik is out of town and if you are not hiring a car you will be dependent on taxis or the daytime local buses to Lagos.

As regards taxis from Lagos Station or bus sstation...hmmmm!

Better pm me nearer the time with your details and I'll try to get one there for you.

Lagos to Seville & Jerez

Lagos t o Jerez is only do able in two ways.

1) Car Hire.

If you are going from Lagos to Jerez and back you could pick up a hire car from one of several agents in Lagos and drive.

The route runs:

Lagos
Ayamonte (Portugal/Spain Frontier)
Seville
Jerez

Distance is: 363km
Time. (4 hours.)

If doing this run between May and September I recommend you start now later than 06:00 a.m or after 17:00 to avoid the heat of the day or hire a car with air con.

Car Hire will only be economic if you are returning the car to Lagos as one drop-off charges will be high and will only be available from the big boys like Hertz, Avis or Europcar.

Whne I hire cars to go to Spain, I usually rent from Luzcar. I took one of their Meganes from Lagos to Granada last November. There prices are slightly higher than others but include insurance for Spain and second drivers.

See:

http://www.solpraiaferias.com/carhirealgarve/index.php?option=en

2) Bus

There are twice daily buses on weekdays only year round (1st June 2007 to 30th September 2007 daily) from Lagos to Seville. From Seville you can then get another bus to Jerez.

See the following sites for info:

Cubsur's excellent site at:

www.algarvebus.info (Seville page)

The buses leave Lagos at:

06:30 Arrive Seville: 13:00
13:45 Arrive Seville: 20:15

According to this site there are at least
9 daily buses to Jerez from Seville at least two of which appeaer to connect. with the above.

http://www.seviquorum.com/transportes/autobuses/provinciales/index.htm

I suggest that you check the bus times out as the site in the Seville Forum does appear a bit old. However, I know from personal experience that there are plenty of departures from Seville to Jerez.

Lagos, Portugal to Lisbon, Portugal using eva-bus.com

I use the EVA bus/coach service from Lagos to Lisbon frequently.

The service from Lagos calls at Praia da Rocha, Portimão, Lagoa and then proceeds DIRECT NON-STOP to Lisboa Sete Rios Rodoviarío (bus station).

Lisboa Sete Rios Bus Station

IT DOES NOT PASS GO! IT DOES NOT COLLECT €200!!

Transit time from Lagos is 3hr45mins.

There is NO STOP between Lagoa and Sete Rios! This takes about 2hrs45mins

There is an on-board toilet and occasionally, a cafe service.

If the bus is full it can be fun!!.

On-board EVA Bus leaving Lagos, Portugal
Rede-Expressos and RENEX buses from Lagos to Lisbon do stop en-route, usually at the Aljustrel Service Area on the A2 Lisbon - Algarve Motorway. Transit Time is longer (up to 4hrs30mins) but, at least, one has 15 minutes to stretch one's legs. If one, takes the overnight RENEX service, and there are no clouds, one has the opportunity to marvel for 15 minutes at the beautiful night sky over the Alentejo!

Between the three bus services, there are, at least, 16 daily services between Lagos and Lisbon. In Summer frequencies increase.

Lagos Bus Station
A Final Point! The Renex service has its Lisbon terminal at Gare Oriente Bus Station which is only 3 Metro stops from Lisbon Airport.

Midnight curfew laws - Lagos, Algarve - Pt. II

B was at the meeting on Thursday night in person.

Despite erroneous figures in the local press, the Lagos Cultural Centre Auditorium was full. (289 persons). At least, and estimated further +100 persons could not get in! Indeed, as a result a Round 3 public session has been organised in the same venue for 21:00, Tuesday night, 22 January 2013.

It was interesting to not that there was a substantial uniformed police presence as well as (off-duty police?) rather large gentleman of a security nature manning the doors.

The session began with the President of the Council making a 25 minute presentation about the proposed changes to the law concerning the licensing of bars, cafes, restaurants and other establishments. From the beginning, it appeared that the council has been shocked by the force of reaction, from not just the business community, but also the local community at large. Many local resident expats were present.

At one point, when the President started talking about a long standing desire to promote Lagos as a "Quality Tourism" destination, the auditorium burst into hysterical laughter.

What was very clear from subsequent discourse is that the Câmara Municipal of Lagos, at all levels, really has absolutely no understanding of the profile of its own tourism industry, its importance to the city, and how it integrates into the regional Algarve and national tourism industry.

There is a total disconnect between the town elders and administration and the reality of life in the council area. An example of this was raised by a representative of the local cafe owners who pointed out that the new regulations would not allow local cafes from opening before 08:00 in the morning thus stopping workers who start early from having their morning bica, (and in the case of pedreiros, maceiras!)

Furthermore, it has no understanding of the competition it faces from competitors in the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic. It also has not understanding as to how the local tourist product is being hit by the crisis and as to how its own actions/inaction are compounding the problems faced by local tourism.

However, there was some good news.

Firstly, the outline of proposed law (displayed on a Powerpoint presentation) showed that the Council had already made a move to amend the law to allow for the extension of the period of opening hours for the period between 1st June and 30 September for the bar sector until 02:00.

Secondly, the Council announced the creation of a working group to include representatives of the hospitality industry to work through the problems arising.

Thirdly, I have never before heard Lagos Council members with voices quavering while making their presentations. There is no doubt that the widespread public reaction, supported by on-line petitions signed by over 3000, (thanks to all here that signed!), and the power of the web, has hit them full-frontal like a Tsunami. They now realise they have a big problem with a local community that wants to see Lagos properly managed and developed as a well-run tourist centre.

A further point made by a local elderly Portuguese resident of down-town Lagos was that the problem was not essentially noise from bars, many of which already have sound limiters installed, but from people partying in the street. He continued to state, I understand (I had to leave before his intervention) that the problem was one of security and effective policing.

There are many other aspects to this ongoing saga that involved local politics, historic mismanagement etc. which I will not bore anyone with.

Suffice to say, incredibly and in closing, that some movement is being detected on the part of the Câmara vis à vis the proposed noise regulations and closing hours.

STOP PRESS!
Latest intel from one of my local informers tells me that, it now (allegedly) appears that the engineer from the Lagos Câmara who sat alongside the President on Thursday night and made the technical presentation about the new laws, including necessary sound suppression equipment for bars, is allegedly a small shareholder of a company, owned by her husband, that PROVIDES SUCH EQUIPMENT.
I also understand that, (allegedly) legal counsel is now being taken about reporting the Council and its staff to the Tribunal for abuse of position and and anti-competitive practices under Article 101 of the The Treaty on The Functioning of the European Union.
If this is true and gets some traction, who said the EU was of no use????
Looks likes we will get our tourist night life back to normal for all!

Palaces in the Algarve and the South of Portugal

Just got back from a business trip to Coimbra! (Cubsur...Rede Expressos up - 6hrs 45 mins / Rede Expressos back to Sete Rios, Lisbon and then EVA to Lagos - 6hrs 45. Round trip cost - +- € 60.00)

If you want three days of history in Portugal, Coimbra and environs are a good place to start.

Viz Lagos and history:

While there may not be castles on the scale of Pena, Obidos, Alcobaça and Batalha in the Western Algarve there is plenty of history.

Recent archaelogical research suggests that the region of Portimão and Lagos was inhabited by he Phoenicians +- 2600 years ago.

There are Roman ruins in Lagos and Praia da Luz.

Lagos evolved as a town during Moorish and early Portuguese history and it was from Lagos, Sagres, Sines and Lisbon that the first Portuguese voyages that opened up the route to India around the Cape of Good Hope and to Brazil.

Much of the town was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, at which time, the Capital of the Algarve was transferred to Faro. Although the city walls remain, as do certain key churches and other buildings, much of the old town was destroyed at that time.

None less, together with Tavira, Lagos is still one of the two towns in the Algarve that retains their "Portuguese Feel" and atmosphere.

The nearest castles are at Silves(Moorish) and Loulé. There are no palaces in the Algarve. Prior to the arrival of rail, the Algarve was still considered not part of Portugal and, in fact, treated more like a colony.

Until the end of the monarchy in 1910, the monarch was known officially as the "king/Queen" of Portugal and the Algarve. Despite this, the monarch's rarely if ever visited the Algarve, hence, no Palaces in the regal sense.

Indeed, from memory there are few "Palaces" per se South of a line running from Setubal to Evora.

Plenty of large and small castles but Palaces no!

List of Palaces in Portugal from Wikipedia (in Portuguese) here:

Also, see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagos,_Portugal

A final thought, if you have a car and are coming in October, (and, if cost is an issue, depending on whether tolls will have then been implemented on the A22), you could take your friend to Sevilla for the day (Albeit a long one!). 3hrs each way on good motorway. Park at either Estacion das Armas or Colon Underground car park and visit the Alcazar Palace.

Also pop into the Cathedral next door and see Christopher Columbus' tomb!

Algarve - Lagos

Faro is 80kms from Lagos.

The Algarve is a region 180km wide by 40km deep. You will not be able to explore everything in 2 days.

I suggest that if Lagos interests you, you should here here. You can change from the Lisbon to Faro train at Tunes junction and take a local train to Lagos.

There are twice daily buses from Lagos to Seville.

See Cubsur's page on this here:

Algarve & Portugal - Possible Itinerary - Summer 2008

As you are coming to the Algarve between 20 to 26 July, I STRONGLY repeat STRONGLY do not recommend Albufeira.

This is peak tourist season.

Albufeira will be full of tourists from Northern Europe at that time. It has lost its Portuguese character. If you want a resort full of English, Irish, and Dutch Pubs then Albufeira is OK.

Otherwise, I would strongly recommend you consider the following alternatives:

1) Lagos

In the Western Algarve and where I live. Dating from prehistoric times, it retains its city walls and Portuguese character. Lots of Portuguese restaurants. Historically, it was the jumping of point for the Portuguese Voyages of Discovery.

Great Beaches - Meia Praia, 5km of sand, Porto de Mos, Praia Dona Ana.

An ideal departure point for exploring the Algarve and the West Coast.

Have a look at this link on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagos,_Portugal

If you read Portuguese, see this one as well:

http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagos_(Portugal)

In Lagos, I can recommend, the Marina Club which should suit your needs.

See:

http://www.marinaclub.pt/

Also, The Hotel Aqualuz

http://www.aqualuz.com/en/home.html

Both the above are near beaches but also within easy walking distance of the town for restaurants and bars.

If you are looking for apartment rental, have a look at the Lagos page of this website here:

http://www.paraisolpraia.com/index.php?content=sel_prop&town=001

The site is still being developed for 2009 so you would have to email them on:

paraisolpraia@gmail.com

They have rental apartments on Meia Para Beach that I know, but you need a car.

I can also suggest you look at

http://www.holidayslagos.com/english.html

Don't worry about the site. The owner is reputable and has a good range of properties.

For the above two you can say you were referred by Barlaventoexpert!

You may find some more nuggets of interest by searching my blog here:

http://barlaventostravelblog.blogspot.com

2) In the Eastern Algarve, I would recommend Tavira which like Lagos retains a sense of character.

I not sure what your budget is but I can recommend the Hotel Vila Galé in Tavira.

http://www.vilagale.pt/pages/hoteis/?hotel=3

As regards, travelling to the Algarve, make sure you do want to take the Bus.

EVA buses leave Lisbon from the Sete Rios coach station - Metro Station - Jardim Zoologico and about 12 minutes from Rossio by Metro.

However, it is you first time coming to the Algarve, you might consider the train.

The trip is spectacular. Leaving Lisbon Entrecampos Station (Metro Station - Entrecampos) you cross the 25 Abril bridge with stunning views over the Tejo and then pass through the Alentejo until reaching the Algarve. There are two fast Alfa-Pendular trains and several Intercity trains per day. The former are air conditioned.

For Lagos, you would change trains to a local train at Tunes, while

for Tavira, you would change trains at Faro.

You can find a direct link to the pdf version of the current CP timetable for this route on my blog:

Scroll down on the right and you will find at panel entitled:

http://barlaventostravelblog.blogspot.com

»» Algarve & Portugal - Travel Transport Links

In this panel look for:

>>>Portuguese Railways - 2008 - Lisbon - Algarve Faro/Lagos Timetable

Click on it to download the timetable in pdf form.

As regards, car hire most vehicles in Portugal are manual shift. Automatics are available at a premium and need to booked well in advance.

In Lisbon & Tavira, I would recommend AutoJardim.

http://www.carhireyes.com/autojardim/

In Lagos, I would recommend Luzcar (they could meet you off the train)

http://www.paraisolpraia.com/carhirealgarve/index.php?option=en

As regards day trips to Porto, your best bet would be by High Speed Alfa-Pendular Train from Sta. Apolonia Station.

You can find the timetable in my blog as indicated above under:

>> Porto - Lisbon - Porto Train Timetable

Current trip time is 2hr:45min each way so you will not have lot of time.

Really you should concentrate on the River area and the Centre of the Town.

For more info, have a look at this link to the Porto offical tourism site:

London to Lagos, Algarve. Portugal

Lagos is situated in the South-Western part of the Algarve region of Portugal about 275 km from Lisbon Airport and 80 km from Faro Airport.

It does not have its own airport.

From London, most visitors fly in via Faro Airport. However, public transport from Faro Airport to Lagos is not easy.

You would have to get a local bus or taxi from Faro Airport to Faro Centre and then a bus or train from Faro to Lagos. Altenatively, you could arrange transport with one of the private shuttle services than operate from the airport

For flights from London Airports(Stansted, Gatwick, Luton) to Faro see:

Easyjet
Ryanair
Monarch
Thomson's Fly

From Lisbon you would need to get a train or bus to Lagos:

By train you would take a taxi five minutes to Gare Oriente where there is a bus and rail station. From there you can get either train (change at Tunes juction) or RENEX bus to Lagos.

For flights from London Airports(Stansted, Gatwick, Luton) to Faro see:

Easyjet
TAP
British Airways

You can find links to directly download train and bus for Lisbon - Lagos and Faro - Lagos (train) timetables in pdf format in the "Algarve & Portugal - Travel Transport Links Panel" on the right hand side of my blog at
