Travel from Rome,Italy to Faro,Portugal

There are currently no direct airline routes between Rome and Faro.

Most airlines, with the exception of TAP, Lufthansa, and a couple of Scandanavian operators, are low-cost and therefore, one would have to buy two one sector tickets via a hub and hope the flights connect.

Vueling.com, (a Catalunyan low-cost ), begins seasonal flights between Barcelona and Faro from 20 Junee 2016. They also operate Rome to Barcelona. Unusually for a low-cost they allow multi-sector bookings. I have used them in the past to travel Sevilla to Napoli via their Barcelona base...all on a single ticket.

There is a flight available on 20 June as follows:

Roma (FCO): 09:55

Barcelona: 11:45

Barcelona: 13:55

Faro (FAO): 14:50 (-1)

Another option, but not lowcost, is with IAG's Iberia Group via Madrid Barajas. Iberia operates the sector Roma to Madrid Barajas and its subsidiary Air Nostrum will be operating three flights per week in the high season between Madrid Barajas and Faro.

On 1st June, 2015 when flight start there is availability on the route as follows:

07:45h - Roma Fiumicino (FCO) Terminal 3

10:20h - Madrid Adolfo Suarez Barajas (MAD) - Terminal 4

Duración: 2h 35m

11:35h - Madrid Adolfo Suarez Barajas (MAD) - Terminal 4

11:50h - Faro (-1)

Duración: 1h 15m.

Current price is around 250€ at time of checking. See: http://www.airnostrum.es/

The final option would be by TAP Air Portugal. See http://www.flytap.com/

At present there appear to be three to four connections per day via Lisbon in early June for prices around € 175.00 at the time of writing.

However, I would issue a major warning about booking with TAP so far ahead. The company is currently in the final phase of yet another attempt at privatization. The Pilot and Aircrew unions are all making mutterings about new strikes in common months as things come to a head.

Train from Seville to Faro

My reply to a really stupid question on the TripAdvisor Seville Forum which has be previously answered hundreds of times.......

"Obviously, you have not searched Google or these forums as you would have found a myriad of posts on this subject going back at least 9 years!
There are and never has been a direct train line from Seville to Faro.
Perhaps you are using a printed 1980's travel guide? At that time, there was a local train, (since discontinued) from Huelva to Ayamonte on the Guadiana. From there, there was a ferry to Vila Real Sta. Antonio, and then another local train to Faro. The line between Huelva and Ayamonte was taken up over 20 years ago!!!!! Hence, it is an "ex-Railway"!!!
So if you insist on wanting to go by train from Seville to Faro, be prepared to take AVE from Seville to Madrid, the overnight Lusitano Express to Lisbon and then an Alfa-Pendular/Intercidades from Lisbon to Faro.
To repeat, once again for future generations (or at least the next 2 generations), THERE IS NO DIRECT (or easy indirect) RAIL SERVICE BETWEEN Seville and Faro.
Now if you want to travel between Seville and Faro by public transport, go to this page on Cubsur's excellent website, which for the past 9 years has been the main source for information on this topic!!!

Flights to Faro

At present, there are currently no direct flights scheduled from Faro to Milano in either the winter or summer 2013.
Ryanair have tried to animate routes to both Milano/Bergamo & Orio al Serio in previous seasons, as well as to Madrid and Barcelona.
Indeed, I even understand that for Summer 2013 there will be no route to Madrid.
Unfortunately, it appears that low usage resulted in these being dropped. Efforts have been made to promote the Algarve as a tourist destination into the Italian and Spanish market but with little success. So existing scheduled routes target the destinations in the Algarve's main target markets...viz. UK, Ireland, the NetherlandsGermanyBelgium, France, Scandanavia, Switzerland, Canada, Luxembourg and certain charter markets such as PolandFinland and Russia.
Decreases in visitor numbers to the Algarve is severely affecting Faro's attractiveness as a flight destination and I am afraid it is only going to get worse.
I recently had to travel from Lagos, Algarve to Pompeii in Italy via Napoli. The only options were either via Sevilla or Lisboa. In the end, because I like Seville and had to spend the night there, I took the twice daily bus from the Algarve to Seville and then flew Vueling.com from there.
I am increasingly recommending folk want to travel to and from the Algarve to consider usingLisbon as their gateway. There are frequent buses between Albufeira and other Algarve towns to Lisbon, taking three to four hours and from Lisbon there is a much greater choice to flights to a variety of European and destinations including Italy.
As regards France, ryanair.com fly several times a week to Paris Beauvais.
Have a specific look at vueling.com. They are the only real low-cost airline that I know that offers through booking. When I flew from Seville to Napoli in November 2012, I got a ticket for €55.00. The route, however, was by one aircraft from Seville to Barcelona, a two hour stop-over and then another Barcelona to Napoli.
Vueling.com fly from Lisbon as well.
On final option to consider, could be flying Ryanair from Faro to Porto. There are many more flights from Porto into destinations in France, Spain and Italy than there are from Faro.

Madrid - Jerez - Salema - Lisbon

I would therefore recommend one of the two following options:
1) Hire a car in Madrid, Drive it to Jerez, then to Salema, then Lisbon. Put it in the Long Term Car Park at Lisbon Airport while you are in Madeira, then drive back to Madrid. Bear in mind that this routing will incur substantial tolls on the Portuguese Motorways. (Incl. electronic ones on the Algarve spinal Via de Infante A22.) Also bear in mind when renting a car to specify automatic if you are not conversant with manual shift.
2) If you want to do the trip by public transport, then take the AVE from Madrid via Seville to Jerez. Return to Seville by bus or train. Overnight in Seville. Take daily morning DAMAS/EVA buses from Seville to Faro/Lagos, in the Algarve. Either hire a car in Faro/Lagos or take the regular EVA bus to Salema.
2 days later, take the bus back to Lagos and then train/bus to Lisbon or drive from Salema to Lisbon.
Bear in mind a one-way hire will incur a drop-off fee. For this type of rental, I suggest Auto-Jardim or Europcar as both have offices in Lagos and Faro. In Faro bear in mind to specify pick-up at the TOWN office. Otherwise you will have to trail out to the airport to pick up a car.

Travel Madrid/Faro/Granada

It depends when you intend travelling.

As from 27th March 2011, Ryanair.com will be restarting its direct flights from Madrid to Faro. Think they run three times a week.

Otherwise, the alternatives as indicated above are:

1) Bus -

http://www.socibus.es from Madrid Estacion del Sur bus station to Seville Plaza das Armas Bus Station and then either:

i) One of the two daily DAMAS/Eva transportes buses from Seville to Faro

See: http://goo.gl/OcHMV

Did this trip myself back in December 2010.

ii) One of the alsa.es buses from Seville to Faro. (Twice daily at weekends)

2) Train/Bus

As previously stated, AVE train from Madrid to Seville and then bus as above.

As regards travelling from Faro to Granada, bus is the only real option and you will have to travel via Seville again.

Alsa.es operates this route. It requires a transfer between Seville Estacion das Armas Bus Station and Prado Bus Station in Seville.

Current Schedule shows:

Depart Faro: 01:15
Arrive Granada: 11:00

You may be able to get better connections traveling by DAMAS/Eva transportes buses from faro to Seville and then connecting with a Seville to Granada bus.

There are several daily.

As regards cheap hire car at Faro Aiport, this is unlikely. Prices are climbing due to shortage of vehicles and a host of other economic factors.

However, bear in mind that the cheapest price quoted may not be the best once you look at the small print.

How to get from Cadiz Spain to Porto or Lisbon in Portugal?

There is no convenient train services (you would have to go via Madrid and Seville), nor flights, (you would have to go via Madrid.)

Your best bet will be by bus as follows:

1) TG Comes (http://www.tgcomes.es/) operate coaches between Cadiz and Sevilla El Prado Bus Station every couple of hours from 07:00 thru 21:00. Transit time is about 2 hours.

2) Then see this article on my blog which details how to get from Seville to Lisbon via Faro:

http://goo.gl/6eM91

Do not forget about the 1hr difference between Spanish time and Portuguese Time.

3) From Lisbon there are regular buses and trains to Porto. From Lisbon Sete Rios Bus Station, there are frequent hourly services to Porto operated by Rede Expressos hourly through the day until 21.00. Transit time is about 3,5 hours.

See: http://www.rede-expressos.pt

There are several trains per day also between Faro or Lisbon and Porto.

Timetable here: http://goo.gl/kTGAW

Faro Bus Station is close to the Rail Station.

In Lisbon, you would need to get a surburban train or Metro to get to Gare Oriente Station to connect with the trains to Porto.

Lagos, Algarve, Portugal to Ploesti, Romania

I have just arrived in Romania this morning to visit friends.

A synopsis of my route is as follows:

I left Lagos on Sunday morning by catching the 06:14 train from Meia Praia, (06:10  from Lagos) to Faro,

We arrived in Faro on time at 07:50.

I had a coffee and caught the 08:10 EVA bus to Seville Plaza das Armas Bus Station.

Arrived Seville 15 minutes early.

Bought a ticket for the 15:00 Socibus bus to Madrid Barajas Airport via Madrid Estacion del Sur.  This arrived at Madrid Barajas airport Terminal 1 at 21:50, 20 minutes late, owing to bad weather. There was a 15 minute stop at a service area just north of Bailen.

I then caught the 02:25 Wizzair flight from Madrid Barajas to Bucharest Baneasu, Flight arrived at Baneasu at 06:45, 15 minutes early.

It was a grey misty morning. Baneasu is not the world's most welcoming airport. Airside bus seats were filthy and the terminal arrivals area is very very small. Got through formalities and got my bags with no problem. There is a small hole in the wall currency change on the right as you press through to the street. I changed a few Euros just to have some RON on me. Then outside straight onto the street. Ambushed immediately by touts. Dealt with those with firm but polite No's!

Luckily, my friends met me and off we went to Ploesti, a 40km drive.

What I already like about Romania is the Buzz! I also like being able to have chicken and chips with a beer ta 08:00 in the morning after a long flight.

Some notes:

* Wizzair were fine. They are like a Ryanair of Eastern Europe. Clean Airbus 320's all less than 3 years old. The seat pitch is small which could be a problem for larger people.

* Madrid Barajas - That late at night, all the shops were closed BUT there is a all night eatery in Terminal 1. Expensive but good.

* Bucharest Baneasu Airport - If this is to be developed into a serious hub for Low Cost Operators bringing in tourists, it needs to be cleaned up! I know Romania seeks to boost its tourist industry and I also know that with the IMF in situ and the economy in dire straights, it is difficult to promote new infrastructure projects but this should be a biggy! A short term interim project with some new airside buses, a simple single storey 30 sq. metre industrial warehouse type prefab extension to the airside to handle incoming passengers (saw this done with the departures terminal at Harare Airport in Zimbabwe in the early 80's )and a taxi rank for licensed taxis at arrivals would improve enormously without being ridiculously expensive.

Sunday, 21 November 2010

Just arrived in Seville. Got the 06:14 from Meia Praia to Faro. Then 08:20 bus from Faro to Seville. Arrived 20 minutes early. Will catch 15:00 Socibus from Estacion Plaza das Armas to Madrid barajas Airport. Beautiful sunny day here in Seville. Sunday only Restaurants open. Sitting in Cafe das Indes just of C Julio Cesar. http://amplify.com/u/freh

Portugal

You still have not stated clearly which areas of Portugal you wish to visit from Spain!

In all, I would say that Madrid is the best jumping off point to visit Portugal as there are low cost flights from Madrid to Lisbon and Porto. There are also good regular bus services between Madrid and Lisbon.

There are no direct connections between Gibratar and Portugal. It is possible, however, to get a buses from Algeciras to Seville and then connect to a twice-daily bus to Faro and Lagos in the Algarve Region of Portugal or to the daily bus from Seville to Lisbon.

Visit to Portugal

jabraltur? Sorry but I don't know that place!

Portugal is a fair sized country! Which place in Portugal do you wish to travel to from Madrid in January?

How long does one need to tour portugal? Depending on which areas in Portugal you want to go to and what you want to see I would say from 1 week to 1 month.

Portugal to Morocco - By bus from Lisbon or Faro to Seville, Spain and then by bus to Algeciras, Spain. Then ferry to Morocco.

Ryanair.com have announced that they will be operating three low-cost flights a week from Porto to Marrakesh as from November 2010.

Royal Air Maroc and TAP-Air Portugal also operate flights from Lisbon to Casablanca,

Driving the fastest route from Faro to Madrid

The fastest way from Faro, Algarve, Portugal to Toledo or Madrid is as marked on the following google map:

http://bit.ly/91QV37

Transit Times: 7 hours.

I have driven this route several times. It is toll-free motorway all the way apart from near Madrid. Fuel in Spain is cheaper than in Portugal. The road is also newer and better than the Seville - Cordoba - Madrid route. Speeds of 100/120 km per hour can be maintained on most of the route except around cities.

To summarise:

Faro to Seville - A22/A49
Seville to Merida - A66
Merida to Toledo/Madrid - A5

The A66 runs through some beautiful countryside.

Have a great trip

Travel to Boom Festival

There is no train from Madrid to Castelo Branco.

There is a train from Madrid to Badajoz but you would have difficulty getting from Badajoz to Idanha-a-novo.

The festival organisers do offer buses from Madrid and Lisbon Airports.

See: http://bit.ly/cHU6d7

Also see my recent comments here: http://bit.ly/ayPd2E

Getting to Castelo Branco from Faro would not be impossible.

You would need to get a bus or cab into Faro Bus Station. Then a Rede Expressos bus, some of which would require a bus change at the Sete Rios Bus Station in Lisbon. Transit time would be between 7 and 8 hours.

I have published and extract from the relevant timetable here:

travel from Faro portugal to Malaga spain.

These guys may be able to assist:

http://www.iberiacarhire.com/

Also Ryanair now fly from Faro to Madrid a few times a week. You might be able to get a connecting low cost to Malaga.

Monday, 15 March 2010

Paris to Portugal Paris to Portugal

Ryanair.com starts operating direct flights from Paris Beauvais to Faro, Airport 4 times a week from April 2010.

Unfortunately, Easyjet's flights from Orly appear only to start from 1st July or so. (To be confirmed.)

You best bet for Barcelona, would be either by Ryanair.com from Faro to Madrid and then train/plane to Barcelona. Alternatively, as you propose fly to Lisbon, pick up a car, travel to Lagos and then back to Lisbon.

There is no direct train link from Faro into Spain.

Thursday, 11 March 2010

Lagos to Ibiza

There are no cheap nor low cost direct links between Lagos, Algarve, Portugal and Ibiza.

In fact, there are relatively few air links between the Iberian Peninsula and Ibiza.

https://www.balearia.com operates ferries from Barcelona, Dénia and Valencia to Ibiza. However, this would mean catching a bus from Lagos to Seville and then another to one of the above centres, then a ferry. Total transit time would be possibly in excess of 48 hours.

By air, there are two options but both will probably be quite expensive during the period in question.

1) airberlin.com from Faro Airport,(70 km from Lagos) to Palma de Mallorca and then ferry to Ibiza.

2) ryanair.com from from Faro Airport,(70 km from Lagos) to Madrid and then Spanair, Iberia or Air Europa to Ibiza.

Madrid and Badajoz, Spain to Lisbon, Portugal

There is one daily train service service from Badajoz to Lisbon as follows:(click on full screen to view.)

badajoz_lisboa_rail_timetable_2010

There are bus services as follows:

alsa.es

and

anibal.net

Timetable see:

http://bit.ly/lisbon_madrid_anibal

A final alternative would be to route via Faro in the Algarve.

There is one website that allows pick-ups in Spain with reasonable drop-offs at Faro Airport. They then offer pick-up of a Portuguese Hire car there as well.

See:

http://www.iberiacarhire.com/
