Lagos - New Urban Bus Service

Further to my previous post, I have now obtained further details of the service courtesy of the website of the Camara Municipal de Lagos and the nascent web-site of the ONDA bus service.

Portuguese versions here:

Camara Municipal de Lagos

Onda - Timetables - PDF download

I have also translated a large part of this info which is available at the bottom of this article in three png images.

The interesting thing about these new services, resutling from a €1mn investment in new buses is that Lagos, Praia da Luz, Barão São João and Bensafrim will now have regular services at good frequencies between them even on Sundays from early in the morning till around 20:00.

It still means that is you want to go to Lagos from Praia de Luz for a night out you will have to take car but for those who only need day services it is going to be a great improvement.

Lagos Zoo will also now benefit from several services a day.

Just click one them and they will enlarge.

Lagos, Algarve, Portugal - Urban Bus Routes - Onda

I was in town on my bike this morning, (it's a beautiful day here in Lagos, btw ) and dropped by the bus station. My friend Ana who works in the ticket office there tells me that ONDA has not provided them with printed up to date copies of their timetables despite repeated requests!
So as far as ONDA (www.aonda.pt) goes, the online timetables offer the best source of info at present BUT I would not trust them 100%, at present!

Falfeira, Lagos

As the fly crows, Falfeira is about 1 km from the Modelo supermarket down a dirt track which is not in very good condition.

By tar road it is about 4km from town. Walking is totally impracticable as there are long hills.

You would definitely need a car for the shopping etc.

Follow-up: 19:30

Just been up there.

Casa Sebastião is situated at the extreme east end of Falfeira and technically 1km by road from Lagos.....THE TOWN BOUNDARY sign behind McDonalds on the road to Aljezur! Just measured it on the speedo.

It is situated on the road, that runs from the Lagos to Portelas/Bensafrim, along the ridge behind Lagos to Funchal Ridge.

As I stated earlier it is not easily accesible by foot from Lagos. It is at least 2km if not 2,5 km from the main centre or town down the Avenida. The climb back up is along a national road with no sidewalk. It is a constant steady climb for about 800 metres.

The nearest supermarket (most direct by road) is Pingo Doce about 1,5 to 1,8 km away.

In my opinion it is defintely a villa where a car is required!

The green arrow shown on the following google map gives an approx location within 30 metres.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=37.115904,-8.691131&t=h&sll=37.15781,-8.734502&sspn=0.071158,0.128059&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=37.115893,-8.691194&spn=0.00397,0.009645&z=17

Addendum - November 20, 2009.

Taxis in Lagos are expensive. I would think a fare to and from town would be in the order +- € 6/7 each time.

There are regular buses that pass down the road to Portelas - EN120 with two stops one each about 120 metres either side of the intersection. They are Curvas do Garrocho and ETAR.

Lagos bus company - http://www.aonda.pt/ - operates two lines via those stops:

LINHA 6 (ONDA VERDE)
LINHA 7 (ONDA CASTANHA)

Algarve Bus Company - http://www.eva-bus.com also operates its service to Aljezur along this route.

The climb up to the villa is a long incline as I have said before and there are no pavement along the side of the road. That makes this section of road between Macdonalds and the house dangerous, particularly at night!!!

If you have any doubts, I strongly suggest you hire a car!!!

How to get to Praia de Luz/Luz from Faro

There is no train to Praia da Luz. The nearest station is Lagos which is the western terminus of the Algarve Line.

A taxi/transfer to Praia da Luz from Faro Airport would start around € 70 but may increase depending of time of day/night/week-end etc

There are no direct public buses from Faro Airport to Praia da Luz. You must get a local bus to Faro Train/Bus Station and then a train or bus to Lagos and then another local Onda bus to Praia da Luz.

For more information have a look at Cubsur's excellent site:

Meia Praia, Lagos, Algarve, Portugal - Bus Services

This thread is about Meia Praia, the suburb across the bay from Lagos, a town in the Western Algarve Region of Portugal.

I live in Meia Praia.

There is an excellent bus service operated by the local bus company Onda:

See these articles on my blog: http://bit.ly/dpo9IJ

There is no service after 20:00hrs except in July and August.

A hire car is advisable after this time. Alternatively, take a bus in before 20:00 and then cab back.

Wheelchair friendly Lagos?

1) The local bus network Onda does have a fairly modern fleet but only some of there large buses have wheel chair lifts. The buses of the EVA/Frota Azul fleet that ply the inter-urban routes do not have lifts.

2) Some stretches of roads and pavements do have ramps but generally only those that have been upgraded in recent years. Bear in mind that many pavements are finished with "calcada" (Portuguese traditional stone pavemet) and not tar. This can give for an uneven surface where the calcada has not been relayed for a while.

3) Many (but not all) restaurants in the centre are on ground level with street level access. You would certainly have not problem getting into places like The Adega da Marina, O Algarvio, and several of the restaurants along Rua 25 de Abril in the centre.

Bus from Vila Gale to center of Lagos?

There is an Onda local bus Line 2 / Blue Line that passes in front of the pool area of the Vila Gale.

There is a bus stop at Bairro 10 de Maio, 2 minutes from the Vila Galé.

There are buses every 40 minutes or so during the week and there is a summer service with buses every hour on the hour until 23:30.

Vila Gale by foot is about 20 minutes from the Avenida. if you cut through Dunas Douradas, by the Station and over the marina foot bridge.

I know, I live here.
