This only confirms what I know and have said for many years! Portugal's gastronomic heritage is one of the best in European and the world. Amarante, itself is a delightful quaint little town, unfortunately only accessible by bus or car. It is well worth a visit.

Did the Portuguese arrive in Australia first?

Were Portuguese explorers the first Europeans to arrive on the Australia continent?

This very interesting article published today on the BBC News site and another yesterday on the Sydney Morning Herald today reports that the image of a small kangaroo on a copy of religious processional manuscript, originally owned by a "Caterina de Carvalho", recently offered for sale in New York, and supposed to originate from Portugal between 1580 and 1620, may give real evidence that Portuguese explorers did arrive in Australia prior to Dutch explorers.

Increasingly, traditional western history is being turned upside down by discoveries that do suggest that there was much contact between different parts of the world prior to dates so well established in our "traditional" academic syllabi!!

Does one need a GPS in the Algarve?

The Algarve is a small rectangle +- 180 km East to West and 40km North to South. If you go too far East, except on the A22 Motorway, one will drop into the River Guadiana! To the South and West, one will drive into the Atlantic.
Driving North can be a problem BUT when one starts going through villages where there are more pigs, sheep and men wearing cloth caps, one knows one is in the Alentejo region! :))))
Furthermore, be aware that many GPS maps for the area not always up to date! I have run into this a couple of times in having to go and rescue courier companies who use GPS delivering to the home.
The region is well signposted, and with a good map, Mark I eyeball technology and asking the locals if needs be, one should have little difficulty in getting to one's destination.
