Lisbon to Portimão, Praia da Rocha and Alvor

Absolutely, no need to go to Faro.

Firstly, see the following articles on my blog about getting from Lisbon to Portimão.
http://bit.ly/6THxpM

Secondly, Alto club is actually closer to Alvor than Portimão. It is quite a distance from both the train station and the bus halt.

There are few downtown car hire agencies left in Portimão. Most have migrated to Praia da Rocha.

Renex Bus Company operate at least 8 buses a day from Lisbon to Portmão and Praia da Rocha.

Rede Expressos bus company operate at least 5 buses from Lisbon Sete Rios Bus Station to Portimão and Praia da Rocha.

Links to these Bus Companies can be found in the right hand panel of my blog.

I would suggest that you get a bus from Lisbon to Praia da Rocha. Pick up a car there.

Avis, Hertz and several other companies have rental offices along the strip there.

You could try these guys also:

http://www.autocarhire.net/index.php

Note: Although there are buses to Alvor, I would suggest that Praia da Rocha is a better place to pick up the car as the agencies are all within a fairly compact area. Also, bus is a better way to get down to Praia da Rocha from Lisbon than train as Portimão station is a ways from Praia da Rocha.

Bus/Train travel from Praia da Rocha to Porto

As indicated by algarveholidayer the train from Portimão Station is a good option.

1) Train

From Praia da Rocha you would need to get a local Vai-Vem shuttle bus via Largo de Dique (Lines 5 & 6) from Praia da Rocha to Portimão Station.

If early in the morning you may need to take a cab the 15 minute drive to the station.

See Cubsur's excellent page on this here:

thomasallen.home.sapo.pt/travel/011.htm

From Portimão you would need to get a local train to Tunes Junction - about 35 minutes.

At Tunes you would connect with either one of the twice daily Alfa-Pendular Services that run through to Porto via Lisbon or get one of the Inter-City Services to Lisbon Gare Oriente Station where you would connect with a Lisbon to Porto Train.

As Algarveholidayer indicated timetable info is available on the www.cp.pt site.

You can find a direct link to the pdf version of the current CP timetable for this route on my blog:

http://barlaventostravelblog.blogspot.com

Scroll down on the right and you will find at panel entitled:

»» Algarve & Portugal - Travel Transport Links

In this panel look for:

>>>Portuguese Railways - 2008 - Lisbon - Algarve Faro/Lagos Timetable

>>>Porto - Lisbon - Porto Train Timetable

Click on each to download the timetables in pdf form.

You are looking at a minimum of 6,25 hours for the services using the fast Alpha Pendular from Tunes.

2) Bus

If you also look in the panel on my blog entitled

»» Algarve & Portugal - Travel Transport Links

You will also find two links entitled:

# RENEX Bus Service - Lisbon to Algarve timetable (pdf)

# RENEX Bus Service - Lisbon to Porto timetable (pdf)

Renex (www.renex.pt) operate seven daily bus services from Praia da Rocha to Lisbon Gare de Oriente Coach Station.

Renex also operate connecting buses to from Lisbon Gare de Oriente Coach Station to Porto.

The minimum transit time on this route is about 7.5 hours.

Lisbon - Carvoeiro

Hi!

There are no public transport systems that link Lisbon directly with Carvoeiro in the Algarve.

Essentially, you have two options:

1) Rail

Train from Lisbon Gare Oriente or Entrecampos stations to Portimão (change at Tunes Junction) and then taxi.

2) Long Distance Coach

Both EVA Transportes and Renex operate long distance coach services from Lisbon to Lagoa.

From Lagoa one can get a taxi to Carvoeiro.

For timetables, go to my blog at:

http://barlaventostravelblog.blogspot.com/

Scroll down on the right until you come to the panel entitled:

Algarve & Portugal - Travel Transport Links

In this panel you can find links to download in pdf format the train timetable from:

# Portuguese Railways - Winter 2007/2008 - Lisbon - Algarve Faro/Lagos Timetable

# RENEX Bus Service - Lisbon Gare Oriente to Algarve timetable

EVA Transportes service from Lisbon Sete Rios Bus Station to Lagoa: (Click on Image to enlarge)

There are buses from both Portimão and Lagoa to Carvoeiro. However, in Portimão the bus terminus is a long way from the station and major bridge works are delaying traffic substantially at present. That is why I recommend taxi.

You can see a full bus timetable on Cubsur's site at:

http://thomasallen.home.sapo.pt/travel/031.htm

Lisbon Airport to Lagoa

Lagoa is 60km from Faro.

There is no Metro or Rail Link from Lisbon Airport at present although one is under construction.

One is restricted to buses or taxis(which are pretty cheap.)

There are various options to get from Lisbon Airport to Lagoa:

Rail

Take a taxi or 41 bus from Lisbon Airport to Gare de Oriente train/bus station. (About 5-10 minutes from the Airport)

There is no train station at Lagoa.

Nearest Station is Estombar but unless you arrange a taxi or car to meet you, you will be stuck as it is now just a halt with no ticket office nor facilities.

I suggest therefore Train from Gare de Oriente to Tunes and there change for the Algarve Line to Portimão.

In Portimão take a taxi to your destination.

Make sure that you have the full physical address of the location of the timeshare written down as otherwise the cab driver may not know where to go.

Warning late in the evening there may be no taxis at Portimao station.

Bus

RENEX operates regular bus services from Lisbon Gare de Oriente to Lagoa via Val Paraiso. There are usually a couple of cabs hanging around Lagoa bus station but not always especially at night.

EVA Transportes operates regular bus services from Lisbon Sete Rios direct to Lagoa. Again caution applies on Taxis.

Driving

There is 4 lane highways all the way from Lisbon Airport to Lagoa.
Be advised that section from the Vasco da Gama bridge to Paderne in the Algarve (250 km) is tollway.

As with all of continental Euope we drive on the right with steering on the left. Note that most rental cars are manual shift/drive. Automatics if available attract a premium.

From Lisbon Airport you follow the signs for the Vasco da Gama Bridge. From there you cross the Tejo and follow the signs for the Algarve. Once through the toll plaza at Paderne you will meet the A22 motorway that runs the length of the Algarve. Bear right towards Portimao and Lagos. After 40km and just after passing a GALP service area you will see the off ramp marked Lagoa. At the top of the ramp bear left and follow the local signs for Lagoa.

Transit time with stop and clear traffic: 2:45 min.

Air

A final option would be to fly from Lisbon to Faro International Airport (the airport for the Algarve) and then get a taxi or private transfer to Lagoa. TAP Air Portugal operate the route 4 times daily.

Taxis from Faro Int'l Airport to Lagoa cost in the area of € 53.00 to €63.00.

Lisbon to Alvor / Alvor to Malaga

The best way for both trips is by car!

The drive from Lisbon to Alvor takes 3 hours.

Lagos/Alvor/Portimão will take about four and a half to five hours.

See this article on my blog about my trip on this route last year.
http://bit.ly/lagosmalagacar

If, however, (and you do nor specify it), you are referring to public transport then the best option on both routes is Bus.

Lisbon - Alvor

There are regular buses throughout the day from Lisbon Gare Oriente bus station to Alvor operated by Renex.pt

Go to my blog here:

http://barlaventostravelblog.blogspot.com

Scroll down on the right hand side and you will find a panel
entitled:

Algarve & Portugal - Travel Transport Links

In this panel you will find links for:

# RENEX Bus Service - Lisbon to Algarve (including Lagos) timetable

Click on the latter and you will be able to download the latest timetable in pdf format.

2) Alvor - Malaga.

You will have to get a local urban bus to Portimão.

From there pick up the twice daily Portimão to Seville Bus.

In Seville change bus stations and get a bus direct from Seville to Malaga.

At present there is an EVA/DAMAS but that leaves Portimão at 07:00 and arrives in Seville Estacion das Armas at 13:00 (Spanish Time)

You will need to get a local C4 bus between Estacion Plaza das Armas to El Prado Bus Station which runs from just after 6 in the morning till 23:30.

You will then need to get the alsa.es 15:00 departure which arrives in Malaga at 17:45.

At present. the afternoon bus does not connect with ongoing alsa buses to Malaga

Lisbon to Lagos- Train or Bus?

The main differences are as follows:

1) The train route is, in my opinion, more photogenic.

There is a great, if brief, crossing of the 25 de Abril Bridge which allows a wonderful view, in the day time down along the Tejo from Lisbon to Cascais.

There is then a lovely run through the Alentejo, which gives one a real taste of rural southern Portugal.

Be aware that you have to change trains at Tunes junction to a local rattler that wanders its way through the Western Algarve to Lagos. Again you get to see more than you would in the bus.

2) The trains from Lisbon to Tunes and onward to Faro have buffet cars onboard so that you can get up, wander around, have a coffee or a glass of wine, and thus is less restricting than a bus.

3) The two main bus routes follow the A2 tool main motorway from Lisbon the Algarve and then the A22 Via de Infante Algarve Arterial Motorway to Lagos.

4) The EVA buses from Lisbon Sete Rios only take 3hrs45 mins but are non-stop to Lagoa and then stop only in Portimão, Praia da Rocha, and then Lagos. They have pokey onboard toilets.

5) Renex buses from Lisbon Gare Oriente follow the same route to then end of the A2 motorway but then have more stops along the Western Algarve. They do stop for 15 minutes en route for Coffee etc. They can take up to +4 hours.

6) There are also a couple of daily Rede Expressos buses from Lisbon Sete Rios that follow rural routes through via Messines or via Odemira and Aljezur to Lagos. Again these take +4 hours.

For trains, you can by tickets/make reservations at most self-respecting CP(Portuguese Railways) stations in Lisbon. I would recommend Entrecampos,Gare Oriente,Stª.Apolonia, and I think from memory, Restauradores Station (Sintra Line).

For the buses:

1) EVA/Rede Expressos - Lisbon Sete Rios Bus Station Ticket Office (Metro/CP Station Sete Rios)
2) RENEX - Lisbon Gare Oriente Bus Station Ticket Office (Metro/CP Station Sete Rios)

As regards purchasing tickets at the tourist office at Lisbon Airport or Restauradores/Liberdade not sure, Maybe someone can advise?

Sorry there's too much information. It's the first time we've had that complaint as far as I know.

Portugal - Algarve - Bus Transport - Lisbon & Lagos - New Timetables - 1 June 2017

After many years,as from today, 1 June 2017, there have been big changes in the bus services operating between Lisbon, Portugal and Lagos in the Algarve Region of Southern Portugal

This article also applies to former RENEX services to the towns of Alvor, Portimão,Praia da Rocha, Lagoa, Armação da Pera.

As from today, RENEX Services have been merged with the services of the main national bus company Rede-expressos.

Tickets on buses to the Algarve operated by EVA, RENEX and Rede-Expressos can now be bought online via the Rede-Expressos website:

In Lagos, ALL bus services to Lisbon now depart from the main bus station just off the Avenida dos Descobrimentos..

RENEX Services continue to serve Lisbon Oriente Coach Station at Gare Oriente Railway Station, including the overnight services.

However, all services now call at Lisbon Sete Rios Coach Station first.

Links to extracts (pdf) from the new timetables valid from 1 June 2017 are shown below
(Disclaimer: Please check the bus company's online websites for latest timetables):

Lisbon Airport to Portimão

Unfortunately, CP (portuguese railways have recently desisted from doing a printed downloadable timetable for Lisbon to Tunes and onto Portimão/Lagos).

Fortunately, Cubsur has much of the information over on his excellent site at:

Lisbon Airport to Rocha Brava Resort, near Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal

Unfortunately, Rocha Brava is one of those locations that is somewhat isolated from access to public transport but also from the local community. If you want to explore the Algarve a hire car is recommended. Remember to specify automatic shift (which will atrract a premium) as most vehicles this side of the Pond are manual shift.

I would not normally recommend travelling to the Carvoeiro area from Lisbon, as public transport options are not good. The nearest public transport hub is Lagoa Bus Station or Portimão Rail Station. However, it is unlikely there will be enough taxis on service at either location to lift 11 people with bags. You would also have to get from Lisbon airport to either Lisbon Gare Oriente Bus/Rail Station or Lisbon Sete Rios Train Station.

Links to train timetables and the services offered by bus companies Rede Expressos/Eva and Renex are available in the panel entitled "Algarve & Portugal - Travel Transport Links" to be found on my blog here:

http://barlaventostravelblog.blogspot.com/

By toll motorway, the distance is 270km / 3 hours drive. A private transfer for this sort of distance will be quite expensive.

I do not understand why you are not flying into Faro Airport which is +- 70km from Carvoeiro and is the regional airport for the Algarve.

From there, it would be much easier and cheaper to arrange an airport transfer direct to Rocha Brava.

The following company is able to quote for such a trip:

http://www.low-cost-transfers.com/faro-airport/

Current prices are in the order of € 108.00. Thes may increase by next February however.

The same company is quoting a price, on their Lisbon Airport Site, in the order of € 520 from a similar transfer from Lisbon Airport to the Carvoeiro area.

Portimão - Cruise Vessel "Funchal" lying off as no tug available.

The Portuguese national daily, "Publico" and the regional Algarve daily "Sul" report tonight that the Portuguese Cruise Ship "Funchal" is currently lying of the coast between Alvor and Portimão with 400 passengers aboard.

The vessel, which is returning from a New Year's cruise to Madeira and Morocco, was due to dock in Lisbon on Sunday but was diverted to Portimão owing to poor weather conditions. However, the Port of Sines which  is supposed to provide a tug boat to Portimão in such instances has been unable to dispatch one. Another tug dispatched from Setubal, after the intervention of the President of the Câmara Municipal de Portimão and Central Government authorities, has reportedly turned back to Setubal owing to 7m waves.

It seems incredible to me that the Algarve coast with harbours at Portimão and Faro does not have a single tugboat to assist vessels that need to enter local harbours in times like these.

The availability of such as vessel would probably also increase the usage of Portimão and Faro harbours with concomitant economic benefits to the local economy!

To me this is an issue of not just Portuguese national maritime security, but also EU maritime security.

Resources need to be found to make this happen!

Lagos, Portugal to Lisbon, Portugal using eva-bus.com

I use the EVA bus/coach service from Lagos to Lisbon frequently.

The service from Lagos calls at Praia da Rocha, Portimão, Lagoa and then proceeds DIRECT NON-STOP to Lisboa Sete Rios Rodoviarío (bus station).

Lisboa Sete Rios Bus Station

IT DOES NOT PASS GO! IT DOES NOT COLLECT €200!!

Transit time from Lagos is 3hr45mins.

There is NO STOP between Lagoa and Sete Rios! This takes about 2hrs45mins

There is an on-board toilet and occasionally, a cafe service.

If the bus is full it can be fun!!.

On-board EVA Bus leaving Lagos, Portugal
Rede-Expressos and RENEX buses from Lagos to Lisbon do stop en-route, usually at the Aljustrel Service Area on the A2 Lisbon - Algarve Motorway. Transit Time is longer (up to 4hrs30mins) but, at least, one has 15 minutes to stretch one's legs. If one, takes the overnight RENEX service, and there are no clouds, one has the opportunity to marvel for 15 minutes at the beautiful night sky over the Alentejo!

Between the three bus services, there are, at least, 16 daily services between Lagos and Lisbon. In Summer frequencies increase.

Lagos Bus Station
A Final Point! The Renex service has its Lisbon terminal at Gare Oriente Bus Station which is only 3 Metro stops from Lisbon Airport.

Traveling from Hotel PESTANA DELFIM (Alvor) to Lisbon..

The Renex buses from Lagos to Lisbon Gare Oriente go through Alvor.

To make the 11.25 at Lisbon airport you would need to get the 00:45 service arriving Lisbon Oriente at 05:00 as the early morning service does not go through Alvor. Cost will be +- Euros 15:00

You could get the early morning train but you would need to get a taxi to Portimão-

Algarve (Lagos/Alvor/Portimão) to Valencia

There are no direct public transport links between the Algarve and Valencia. Further more there are no low cost airlinks between Lisbon and Valencia.

The distance is about 929kms.

The only realistic options are:

1) Air from Faro Airport.

Air Berlin have a regional hub in Palma de Mallorca. Their summer timetables may yet change. At present they are showing a flight Faro - Mallorca - Valencia (change in Palma) for a very reasonable price.

The only problem is that at present it only shows as operates as a through connection on Wednesdays.

site: http://www.airberlin.com

1) Bus/Air -

Renex Bus
from Alvor to Lisbon Gare Oriente. Taxi/Airport Bus to Lisbon Airport

Then low cost airline Vueling/Easyjet to Madrid and then low cost airline Clickair/Spanair/Ryanir to Valencia.

2) Bus/Bus

Take the Daily EVA/DAMAS bus from Portimão to Seville and then connect with an alsa.es bus from Seville to Valencia.

Check Cubsur's site here for information on the Portimão to Seville Services:

http://thomasallen.home.sapo.pt/travel/001.htm

Alsa schedule is below:

Current Daily Departure schedules : SEVILLA - VALENCIA

Seville Valencia
depart arrive € €
10:00 21:25 49,86 94,73
10:00 21:25 49,86 94,73
16:30 02:15 next day 56,79 107,90
16:30 02:15 next day 56,79 107,90
22:00 09:15 next day 53,20 101,08

See: www.alsa.es

It may also be possible to get a low cost flight from Seville to Valencia but I do not recommend it as getting to Seville Airport from the Algarve is a pain unless you have a car.

Train is not an option as there are no suitable cross Iberian Peninsula services.

Cascais to Portimão

There is no direct route from Cascais to Portimão.

Your best bet will be to take the train from Cascais to Lisbon Cais de Sodre.

Then take the Metro Green Line to Alameda then the Red Line to Gare Oriente.

From there you can get either a long distance RENEX Coach to Portimão or the train via Tunes.

Lisbon to the Algarve by train

The Algarve is a region an area 160km long East to West by 40km North South. It is Portugal's Med.

There are various towns in the Algarve, Faro the capital, Portimão Vilamoura, Albufeira.

Lagos, is an old historic sea-port dating back to Phoenicians times. It still retains its old City walls. It was one of the main points of departure for the Portuguese Voyages of Discovery that opened up the route around Africa for Europe 500 years ago.

Although we have tourists here, Lagos stills retains its Portuguese ambiance.

Express trains from Lisbon to the Algarve run to Faro.

For Lagos, however, you change to a local train at Tunes Station 20minutes before Faro.

Tavira is an old Roman settlement that also retains much of its Portuguese charm. To get there you continue to Faro and take a local connecting train.

Either of these destinations would allow you, provided you travelled by day, to see a lot of the Alentejo region, South of Lisbon and the Algarve. The departure from Lisbon itself is spectacular as it crosses the Tejo estuary under the 25 Abril Bridge offering panoramic views of the estuary and Lisbon.

I suggest you travel down one afternoon, (seat on left hand side of the train to avoid the sun), have a day there, and go back the next day, (seat on right hand side of the train.)

There are also long distance coach services between Lisbon and these centres:

Travel time by train or bus between 3,5 hours to 4,5 hours

Things can be a bit tricky.particularly at Praça de Aeroporto and getting onto the E01, especially if you are leaving at rush hour.

Best bet is to keep calm. If you miss the bridge ramp don't try and find you way back, keep going to Vila Franca da Xira and the pick up the A10 heading South to Alcochete and the Algarve. Its longer bu simpler.

Portimão to Lisbon by road (No Tolls)

I would recommend that your brother take the following itinerary which runs via the old IC1 national road to Lisbon and has no tolls except in crossing the Tagus at Lisbon. (Provided by google maps:)
Note there is a 90km speed limit on much of this route.
